The player takes on the role of Corva Attano, who was once the empress’s bodyguard. Corvo is not only a proficient swordsman, archer and spy, but he also has supernatural powers. He wants to take revenge on the lord regent who involved him in the murder of the empress and the kidnapping of her daughter Emily.

An important role in the game is played by the mysterious Outsider – an omniscient being who is the object of a cult forbidden in Dunwall. He is not on the side of good or evil, he only gives powers to people he chooses, and then watches their choices. After escaping from prison, Corvo becomes the focus of the Outsider, who offers him a chance to exact revenge on the people responsible for his imprisonment. He puts his mark on Corvo, thanks to which he gains magical powers. According to the main designers of the game, Raphaël Colantonio and Harvey Smith, the Outsider lives among the mortals inhabiting the world of Dishonored.
The game offers the possibility of getting rid of every opponent (even the boss) without killing him. Designers Harvey Smith and Raphaël Colantonio describe the game’s environment as a simulation of a closed world in which the player has certain resources at his disposal to complete a task and it is up to him how to use them. If at some point the player encounters thugs harassing innocent bystanders, he can defeat them, but these opponents have existed in the game before – if the main character had eliminated them in earlier missions, the event he observed would not have happened.
